I had the privilege of filling in for our pastor. Keep in mind that this is a small typical SBC Church. For your consideration and hopefully God's glory. Below is the Outline:
Calvary Baptist Church Wednesday 10/2/24 Bible Study
I Introduction
A) As I've shared before, there are numerous study methods that are not used or not used rightly, that cause differences and divisions in the body of Christ.
1. Exegesis vs. Eisegesis.
a) To take out of the text what's there vs. putting into the text what's not there.
2. Who the audience is, who's it being written to.
3. Ability vs. Responsibility, aka God's perspective vs. man's perspective.
4. Context: What's the topic, issue, or situation?
5. Narrative vs. Imperative: A narrative is the writer telling what happened. It may be wise but not a commandment. An imperative is a commandment that we are to obey.
6. Literal vs. Spiritual/Symbolic.
7. This is not all of them, but for today, who it's written to and the context is what causes differences with this text.
B) Today's Text is One of the Most Misinterpreted and Misapplied Texts Ranking Up There With the "Judge Not" Texts
II Reading of the Text (2Pet. 1:1; 3:1; 3:3-9)
Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: (2Pet. 1:1)
This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: (2Pet. 3:1)
2Pet. 3:3-9 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
III The Day of the Lord
A) 2nd Peter is Being Written to Those That Have Obtained Like Precious Faith, the
Beloved, the Usward (2Pet. 1:1; 3:1, 8, 9)
B) To Stir Up Their Minds About Scoffers Questioning Christ's 2nd Coming (3:2-9)
1. They say it's because things have been the same since creation.
2. Peter uses the past judgment of the flood and future judgment of fire on the
ungodly (unsaved, not born again and trusting in the Person & work of Christ).
3. Peter says God's timing is not our timing and that a 1000 years is as a day to Him.
4. Peter says that God is not slack/slow but is patient to us, not willing that any [of us] perish, but that all [of us, the beloved] should come to repentance.
C) Willing vs. Wishing
1. Psalm 115:3 "But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased." Psalm 135:6 "Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places."
2. Isaiah 46:9-11 "Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it."
3. Rom. 9:14-24 "What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews but also of the Gentiles?"
IV Conclusion
A) The Day of the Lord will not happen until the last of the beloved or us-ward come to repentant faith in Christ and His sacrificial death and resurrection, whether that be next week, next month, next year, or next century.
